Images of British Lichenicolous Fungi

Lichenoconium xanthoriae M.S.Christ.

Ascomycota, incertae sedis (anamorph): black pycnidia set in the host apothecia, producing brown, subglobose conidia, 2.5 – 6 µm in diameter, parasitising Teloschistaceae species, principally Xanthoria parietina and X. polycarpa, reported also on other foliose genera but doubted by Diederich (in Nash et al., 2004). Widespread, seemingly scarce but undoubtedly much overlooked.

Refs: Hawksworth (1981), 33-4 (line illustration); Hawksworth (1983), 27; Diederich in Nash et al. (2004), 661.
